Canada loses opening match at European Continental Cup
KETTERING, England – Canada’s national men’s sitting volleyball team lost its opening round robin match Monday to Ukraine at the 11-country European Continental Cup. The set scores were 25-9, 25-7, 25-16.
The Canadian team, ranked 19th in the world to fifth for the Ukrainians wasn’t pleased with its opening performance.
‘’We didn't come ready to play today,’’ said national team coach Ian Halliday. ‘’We will address some things as a team and begin to make changes starting tomorrow (Tuesday).’’
"It's disappointing the way we played today,’’ added Canadian team captain Austin Hinchey. ‘’Against a good team like that you have to compete hard for each point and we didn't do that today."
Canada and Ukraine are in pool A with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Britain and Kazakhstan. Pool B teams are Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, Russia and the U.S. The top four teams in each pool in the round robin advance to the playoff round.
The Canadians face Kazakhstan and Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday.
