Canada to host first round of 2012 FIVB World League men’s volleyball qualifying matches July 29-30 in Ottawa
OTTAWA – Canada’s bid to return to the World League men’s volleyball tournament in 2012 will continue July 29-30 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ont., in a two match series against either Slovakia or Slovenia.
The opponent will be finalized following the completion of the European Confederation Tournament. Canada is assured to host the matches because it is currently ranked 22nd in the world compared to 33rd for Slovakia and 39th for Slovenia.
Canada kept its World League hopes alive last month with a bronze medal performance at the Pan Am Cup in Gatineau, Que.
The last time Canada competed in the World League was in 2007 when it placed 13th. The FIVB World League, now in its 22nd year, is a 16-country intercontinental tournament that runs for over a 6 week period every summer and offers the biggest cash prizes in the sport.
Both matches in Ottawa will start at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the series will be based on a formula of the winning team earning three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win in sets and two points for a 3-2 win. The loser in the first instance would receive 0 points and one point for a 3-2 loss.
Details on tickets to come soon. There are special rates for groups of 10 or more and deals on tickets for both games.
If Canada wins the first round of qualifying it will also host the second round next month against the 15th or 16th place team in this year’s World League.
