Canada finishes seventh at NORCECA youth championships
GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Taylor Lebo scored 15 points to help Canada to a come from behind five-set victory over Costa Rica on Saturday at the NORCECA men’s youth volleyball championships. With the victory Canada ends the nine-country tournament with a 2-2 record and seventh place.
The Canadians, represented by Calgary’s under-17 Canuck Contact team, took the match 25-24, 16-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-9. It’s the first match in the entire tournament to last more than three sets.
Besides Lebo, other top Canadian scorers were Matthew Silver with 14 and Scott Brunet (pictured) with 12.
“Both teams brought a lot of energy,” said Canadian team captain William Bremner. “You could feel the adrenaline.”
After dropping their opening two matches to powerhouses Cuba and the U.S., the Canadians rallied by winning their last two.
“It was fun to play such a close match,” said Canadian coach Don Saxton. “I was happy with the energy we brought. Today was different for us as we got more aggressive with the attack, though we had some trouble defending against of the attacks from our rivals.”
The other Canadian team members are: Brett Walsh, Brian Prigden, Alex Cook, Luke Rauwarda, Sean Martin, Evan Morrow, Matt Traynor and Matt Honeychurch.
The medal matches conclude the tournament on Sunday.
