Canada finishes fourth in women’s volleyball Olympic qualifier

TIJUANA, Mexico – Canada finished in fourth place in the women’s Olympic qualifying tournament following a five-set loss to Puerto Rico 25-20, 20-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-11  in the bronze medal match.

The gold medal game, with the Olympic spot on the line, between Cuba and the Dominican Republic was held later Saturday.

Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., had a memorable match scoring a tournament high 32 points with 26 of them on kills, two on blocks and she added four service aces. Marisa Field of Vancouver added 12 points for Canada.

“Mentally it was a tough match to play without any chances of reaching our main objective for the tournament,” said Canadian team captain Tammy Mahon of Holland, Man.

“It was a good performance from both teams and I am really proud of my team,” Canada’s coach Arnd Ludwig said. “Puerto Rico played a little better than us at the end.”
