Canada earns first win at Pan Am Cup
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., scored 17 points on Sunday night to lead Canada to its first victory at the 12-country Pan Am Cup women’s volleyball tournament. The Canadians defeated Mexico 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 before more than 5,000 fans.
With the win the Canadians now have a 1-2 record and are tied in third place in Pool A with two round robin matches remaining. The top-three in each pool advance to the playoff round.
Tammy Mahon of Holland, Man., and Lucille Charuk of Tsawwassen, B.C added 11 and eight points respectively. Pavan is currently the top scorer in the tournament with 42 points.
Cuba and the Dominican Republic currently lead pool A with perfect 3-0 marks, Canada, Argentina and Mexico all follow at 1-2 while Chile is winless. In pool B, the U.S., and Brazil remain undefeated.
Canada faces Cuba Monday evening at 8 p.m. EDT.
