Canada defeats Université Laval in exhibition men’s volleyball match

QUEBEC CITY (November 9, 2012) – Canada’s Full Time Training Centre Team defeated the Université Laval Rouge et Or 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18 in a men’s volleyball exhibition match on Friday night at the PEPS.

Rudy Verhoeff of Calgary led the Canadian attack with 18 points (13 kills, three blocks and two aces).  Chris Hoag of Sherbrooke, Que., had 15 points and his brother Nicolas Hoag  14 points.  The Hoags are the sons of Canadian national team coach Glenn Hoag.

‘’We had some ups and downs in the match,’’ said Canada’s FTC head coach Vincent Pichette.  ‘’Our players are working very hard right now and are following a demanding physical program.  We had some strong moments in the first and fourth sets and I was pleased with how we regrouped after dropping the second.  We need to keep working on our consistency and execution.’’

For Laval, Tommy Bélisle, a national junior team member, led the charge with 10 points while Frédéric Mondou added nine.

‘’We battled hard,’’ said Laval’s head coach Pascal Clément.  ‘’We lacked finish near the end of the match and didn’t put enough pressure on our opponents.’’

Canada’s FTC team heads south to play Université de Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Saturday.
