Canada’s Sarah Pavan leads pro squad to fourth in CEV Cup

 BAKU, Azerbaijan (March 25, 2012) – Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., (in blue in photo) pounded a game high 19 spikes but her Villa Cortese, Italy squad just fell short in the bronze medal match at the women’s CEV Cup women's volleyball tournament.

The CEV Cup is season-long tournament to determine the top pro club in Europe.

Villa Cortese lost to Kazan, Russia 25-13, 25-17, 24-26, 25-23 in the third place match. Pavan produced 19 points, all on spikes, and was the third best scorer overall in the match. After a so-so round robin, the Italians squad produced giant victories in the round of 16 and quarterfinals to advance to this weekend’s Final Four.

The Canadian national team star was second in the CEV Cup scoring averaging 4.73 points a set and also second in spiking at 4.16 per set. She will complete her season in the Italian pro league before retuning to Canada in April to prepare for the Olympic trials with the national team.

Baku defeated Cannes, France to win the gold medal 25-14, 25-22, 25-20.
