Canada’s Bansley and Maloney advance to quarterfinals at Quebec Open Jeep

QUEBEC CITY- Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto continued their extraordinary run at the $380,000 Queebc Jeep Open beach volleyball tournament on Friday posting three victories to advance to the quarterfinals.

The tournament is the only Canadian stop on the FIVB World Tour circuit.

Bansley and Maloney, seeded 10th, made a late rally in thee second set against number-13 Roos Van der Hoeven and Jantine van ser Vlist of the Netherlands to win 21-17, 24-22 and assure themselves at least a career-best top-eight finish.

After going 1-1 on Thursday and in a must win situation in every match Friday, Bansley and Maloney started the day with a hard-fought win over Deborah Giaoui and Mélody Benhamou of France 21-16, 19-21, 15-13 in 53 minutes.

In the afternoon they bounced Satoko Urata and Takemi Nishibori of Japan 21-14, 21-18 before heading back on court against the Dutch in the early evening. The next opponent for the Canadians on Saturday is third seeds Maria Clara Salgado Rufino and Carolina Solberg Salgado of Brazil.

Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., and Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., will finish in 13th place after registering a win in the morning then falling to number-one seed Jennifer Kessy and April Ross of the U.S., 21-12. 21-19.

It has also been the best tournament of the year for the Canadian men. Maverick Hatch of Comox, B.C., and Sam Schachter of Toronto will take ninth place after opening with two more wins Friday before falling to eighth seeds Thiago Santos Barbosa and Harley Marques Silva of Brazil 21-16, 21-17.

Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen of Toronto will place 13th after a win and a loss while Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary will rank 17th.

Competition continues Saturday at I’Externat St-Jean Berchmans and Seminaire des Peres Maristes.
