Calgary’s Canuck Contact to represent Canada to at the NORCECA Youth Championships

CALGARY- Calgary’s Canuck Contact under-17 squad will represent Canada at the NORCECA boy’s youth volleyball championships set for April 6-11 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Canuck Contact team members are setters Brett Walsh, Brian Prigden, and Alex Cook; the middles are Luke Rauwarda, Scott Brunet, and Sean Martin; on the left side it’s Taylor Lebo, Evan Morrow, and Will Bremner; on the right side, Matt Traynor and Matt Silver and the libero Matt Honeychurch.

“We’ve had a very good season and we are really looking forward to this big international challenge,” said Canuck Contact coach Don Saxton. “For all of our players it will be their first international experience.”

The Canuck Contact is part of the Canuck Stuff Volleyball Club formed in 1988. The Club added youth programs in 1997 and has a strong tradition of players graduating to Canadian interuniversity squads.

Saxton says the NORCECA tournament will have a lasting effect on his troops.

“All playing experiences add up but international meets are always different,” said Saxton. “The travel will be an experience in itself. Then playing wise they will have to adjust to several different styles and tactics in just a few days.”

The Canuck Contact is in pool A with the United States and Cuba. The Canadians open the tournament April 6 against the Americans then face the Cubans the following day. The quarterfinals are April 9, the semis on April 10 and the final on April 11.
