Broder/Valjas reach playoff round at FIVB Grand Slam

SHANGHAI (May 3, 2013)– Jaime Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto reached the playoff round for the second straight week on the FIVB World Tour beach volleyball circuit on Friday to finish in 17th place at a $220,000 Grand Slam event.

The Canadians completed the round robin portion of the tournament Friday morning with a victory over Martina Bonnerova and Barbora Hermannova of the Czech Republic 21-16, 21-17.  They finished the round robin at 1-2 for third spot in their pool to advance to the first round of the playoffs.

In that playoff match they fell 21-19, 17-21, 15-7 against 13th seeds Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas de Freitas of Brazil.

“Solid showing in the first two FIVB events of the season, qualifying and earning some wins in the main draw,” tweeted Broder.

Last week, Broder and Valjas were ninth at the season opening event.  Earlier this spring they won gold at a NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) tournament stop.
