Binstock and Reader lose to Norwegians at OlympicsLONDON (July 30, 2012) - Josh Binstock of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., lost 21-14, 21-18 to Martin Spinnangr and Tarjei Viken Skarlund of Norway in men’s beach volleyball action Monday at the Olympic Games.
Both pairs are now tied for second place in the pool F standings with one win and one loss apiece. The other pool match between Pedro Cunha and Ricardo Santos of Brazil and British pair John Garcia-Thompson and Steven Grotowski was held later Monday.
“We didn’t play the way we wanted to and found it difficult to play the ball,” Binstock told the media after the match. “We get in trouble when we don’t take care of the ball on our side.”
The Canadians defeated Garcia-Thompson and Grotowski 21-19, 21-13 to open the Games tournament Saturday.
Canada faces the Brazilians in its last preliminary round match on Wednesday at 8 p.m. London time or 3 p.m. EDT in Canada.
“We played them before,” Binstock said. “We lost a tight one in three. So we know that they’re beatable. There’s no lack of confidence here after this.”
Women’s action resumes Tuesday including Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., and Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., (0-1) against Ekaterina Khomyakova and Evgenia Ukolova of Russia (1-0). Match time is 8 p.m. London time or 3 p.m. EDT in Canada.
The 24 pairs in both the men’s and women’s competition are split equally into six pools, playing each team in their group, with the top two advancing to the knockout first round stage along with the two best third-placed teams.
The remaining four third-place teams will then compete in playoff matches to determine which pairs will fill the final two places in the first round.
