Big win keeps Martin and Lessard alive on World Tour beach circuit

MARIEHAMM, FinlandMarie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., rebounded from a first round loss Wednesday to stay alive in main draw action at the 14th stop on the beach volleyball circuit.

Lessard and Martin, who won their two qualification matches on Tuesday to advance to the main draw, defeated Stephanie Hutterman and Anni Schumacher of Germany 21-17, 18-21, 15-13. Earlier Wednesday they opened with a loss to Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti of Italy 21-14, 21-19.

On Thursday, the Canadian pair will need to win two matches to keep going in the double elimination tournament.

The men’s qualifying got underway Wednesday and Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., won their two matches to advance to the main draw which starts Thursday.

Ben Saxton and Steve Marshall of Abbotsford, B.C., as well as Christian Redmann and Richard Van Huizen of Toronto both won their first matches buts lost their second and did not advance.
