Big win keeps Broder/Valjas alive

FUZHOU, China (April 26, 2013)– Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto are into the round of 16 at the China Open beach volleyball tournament.

After two opening round robin losses on Thursday, Broder and Valjas produced a victory Friday in a must-win third and final round robin match 24-26, 21-17, 15-7 over Tatyana Mashkova and Irina Tsimbalova of Kazakhstan.

With the win they advanced to the first round of the playoffs where their opponents Evgenia Ukolova and Svetlana Popova of Russia, seeded 16th, withdrew due to injury.

The 26th seeds Canadians, who advanced to the main draw through the qualifier, face third-seeds Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti of Italy on Saturday in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto dropped their third round robin match to finish at 0-3 and did not advance.
