Beach Volleyball: Canada names Under 21 teams for FIVB WorldsJanuary 29, 2014
Volleyball Canada is pleased to announce the male and female teams that will represent Canada at the FIVB U21 World Championships held in Larnaka, Cyprus, July 22-27, 2014.
The men’s team will consist of 19-year-old Sergey Grabovsky (Aurora, ON) and Chris Towe (Caledon, ON), who is 18. They won the final match of the U21 Selection Tournament - 21-12, 21-16 - over Liam Kopp (St. Catharines, ON) and Sven Trodel (Sudbury, ON).
“The game went really well,” said Grabovsky. “Although we only started playing together three months ago, we worked hard and spent a lot of time preparing for the trials.”
The bronze-medal team was Liam and Lucas Palmer of Windsor, Ontario, who scored a victory over Jake MacNeil (Georgetown, ON) and Gabriel Burlacu (Windsor, ON) 20-22, 21-17,15-8. Burlacu won the recent U23 trials with Greg Simone.
The women’s team of Sophie Bukovec, 18, (Toronto, ON) and Tia Miric, 16, (Toronto, ON) will represent Canada in Cyprus, as well as at the Under 23 Worlds in Poland. Bukovec and Miric won a nail-biter of a match over Megan and Nicole McNamara of Delta, BC, 18-21, 24-22, 23-21.
“It was definitely a stressful game,” said Bukovec of the U21 final selection match. “But we stayed composed and pushed through together. It’s all worth it, and it feels so great and we’re so excited.”
For third place, Alexandra Poletto (Toronto, ON) and Brett Hagarty (Aurora, ON) beat Jill Eisenhauer (Toronto, ON) and Zoe Mackintosh (Toronto, ON) 22-20, 21-14.
The tournament was held this week at the Volleyball Canada Beach High Performance Facility, Downsview Park, in Toronto.
