Beach NORCECA teams finalized

TORONTO (June27,2013)– Grant O’Gorman of Toronto and Sam Pedlow of Barrie, Ont., as well as Taylor Pischke of Winnipeg and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto qualified for the next two NORCECA beach volleyball events with victories at trials held Tuesday and Wednesday at Ashbridges Bay.

In men’s competition, O’Gorman and Pedlow defeated Sam Schachter and Josh Binstock of Richmond Hill, Ont., in the final 21-18, 21-15. Christian Redmann of Toronto and Maverick Hatch of Comox, B.C., were third.

Just this past weekend, O’Gorman won the silver medal with Aaron Nusbaum of Aurora, Ont., at the FIVB U21 world championships.

On the women’s side, Pischke and Humana Paredes, bronze medallists at the U23 worlds last month, defeated Kacie MacTavish and Caleigh Whitaker of Sharon, Ont., in the final 29-27, 25-23 Kayla Ng of London, Ont., and Shanyn Devereux of Toronto were third.

The next two NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) stops are August 21-26 in Cuba and September 11-16 in Mazatlan, Mexico.

Both Pischke/Humana-Paredes and Pedlow/O’Gorman are the teams that will represent Canada at the 2013 Summer Universiade Games scheduled for Kazan, RUS from July 6-17, 2013.
