Bansley and Maloney aim for second medal on NORCECA beach circuit
OTTAWA – Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney of Toronto were pleased with their bronze medal performance last month at the opening stop on the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) beach volleyball circuit but hope to fare even better this week in Guatemala.
Bansley and Maloney are one of four Canadian pairings announced for the competition which runs this Friday to Sunday at Campo Marte in Guatemala City. Also competing in the women’s draw are Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto.
‘’The season is still early and we’re still in preparation mode,’’ said Bansley. ‘’We’re happy where our play is at right now. At the last tournament our serving was tough, we had good rhythm and we set-up really well.’’
In men’s competition, season opening champions Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen of Toronto are skipping this week’s events but Canada still has strong representation with veteran Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary as well as Maverick Hatch and Sam Schachter of Toronto.
Hatch and Schachter held their first outdoor session of 2011 on Tuesday.
‘’It wasn’t as awkward as we thought it would be,’’ Hatch said. ‘’The most difficult thing was to find my serve again. I felt if I hit it like I did indoors back in Toronto it would sail out the back of the court.’’
The tournament draw will be announced Thursday.
