Sarah Pavan says she is living her dream as a professional volleyball player.
This past season, the Kitchener, Ont., native enjoyed an extraordinary season with Villa Cortese in the Italian Pro League, considered one of the strongest in the world. She was the league’s top scorer leading her squad to the final. She won the Best Spiker Award in the women’s Champions League as Villa Cortese advanced to the Final Four tournament.
Those performances won’t surprise anyone who has followed Pavan’s career since she first donned a Team Canada uniform at age 16.
Raised by sports minded parents – her mother was on the 1980 Olympic volleyball team that didn’t go to Moscow- Pavan joined her first volleyball team at age 10. She won three provincial championships with her high school – Forest Heights Collegiate which was coached by her father – and by 14 she was on the national youth team. In addition she won five provincial club titles with the Waterloo Tigers.
Pavan was recruited by the University of Nebraska where she led the school to an NCAA title was named an All American four times. She was the NCCA female athlete of the year in 2006.
There are probably too many highlights with the national team. In 2002, at age 16, she was named the NORCECA Championships MVP, she led Canada to the semis at the 2003 Olympic qualifier, was the top scorer at the 2004 NORCECA champs, and more recently was the top scorer at the 2011 Pan Am Championships.
Since graduating from Nebraska in 2008, she has been one of the most sought after professional players playing mostly in Italy.
Next on Pavan’s list is to help Canada earn an Olympic berth for the 2012 Olympic Games.
