Argentina takes series over Canada in women’s volleyball

BUENOS AIRESArgentina defeated Canada 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 in women’s volleyball on Saturday to conclude the five-match series with four wins.

The Canadians took the first match of the series on Monday in five sets but the Argentineans have come back strong with wins on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The Canadians, ranked 24th the world, are currently tuning up for the FIVB women’s world volleyball championships set for October 29 to November 14 in JapanArgentina, ranked 19th, did not qualify for the worlds.

Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., was the top Canadian scorer on Saturday with 10 points, team captain Tammy Mahon of Holland Man., added nine and Jennifer Hinze of Vancouver eighth.

“I’m not happy with the result tonight,” said Canada’s head coach Arnd Ludwig. “But, I could see progress from the other matches despite our loss.  The first week's goal was to play everyone; next week's goal will be to work on individual skills to eliminate errors and try to connect more as a team on the court."

Canada’s next match is Monday against Peru.
