Another near major upset for Canada at Pan Am
CALLAO, Peru, June 14, 2013 – After bringing Cuba to five sets in the round robin, Canada’s national women’s volleyball team nearly bounced Brazil in the quarterfinals Friday night at the Pan Am Cup.
The Brazilians finally made it to the final four winning the match 25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 20-25, 15-9. It was Canada’s third five-setter in four matches.
Gabriela Braga Guimaraes led Brazil with 27 points, while Silvia Aparecida totaled 12. Kyla Richey was the leader for Canada with 16, Jaimie Thibeault closed with 14 including 3 aces while Lisa Barclay and Shanice Marcelle had 13 and 10 points respectively.
“Brazil did a great job, we tried to focus on the second and fourth set,” said Arnd Ludwig, the coach of Canada.
The Canadians now move in to the fifth to eighth place bracket. They play Puerto Rico on Saturday night. The championship round semis will pit the U.S., against Brazil and the Dominican Republic versus Argentina.
