ROUND ROBIN MATCH REPORTS FOR AUGUST 17, 2010

Pool B: Puerto Rico (2-0) vs Honduras (0-2)

Cuba and Puerto Rico to showdown for first place in pool B

August 17, 2010

GATINEAU -Jorge Antonio Lopez and Christian Rivera scored 11 points each to lead Puerto Rico to a 25-19, 25-13, 25-11 victory over Honduras on Tuesday at the NORCECA junior men’s volleyball championships.

“We’re happy to get the win but we could have played better,” said Puerto Rico’s head coach Ramon Lawrence whose squad is 2-0. “We made many mistakes blocking but we expect to be more focused for our game against Cuba.”

Puerto Rico team captain Ramon Burgos said the players weren’t thinking ahead during their match.

“We tried to focus on today’s game solely,” said Burgos. “Now we can focus on Cuba and we are really looking forward to it.”

Honduras, 0-2, produced a decent first set but fell apart afterwards. Both the coach and team captain wanted the sets to be closer.

“Puerto is a great team and one of the favourites,” said Honduras head coach Carlos Randolfo Funez. “Our players had trouble receiving their serve and we just didn’t find our game today."

“We expected more but it’s a great competition here,” said Honduras team captain Josue Carbajal Vargas. “I knew were facing two great teams but I thought we’d make more of an impact in those matches.”

Vargas and Jose Elias Barahona Diaz were Honduras’s top scorers with five points each.

Pool B: Cuba (2-0) vs St-Lucia (0-2)

August 17, 2010

Cuba shows muscle against St. Lucia

GATINEAU, Que. – Hard-hitting Cuba came out much stronger today at the NORCECA junior men’s volleyball championships defeating a spirited St-Lucia squad 25-10, 25-10, 25-14.

Cuban captain Jorge Carlos Rojas Taylor led all scorers with 17 points while Alejandro Beldarrain Chapotin added 16 and Jorge Gonzalez Garcia 10. The Cubans are now 2-0 in pool B round robin play.

“We played better today but we are expecting more from our players,” said Cuba’s head coach Garcia Garcia Roberto. “St.Lucia played very well and they have a potentially great player in Julian Bissette. It’s good to see the development of Caribbean volleyball.”

“We are getting ready,” said Taylor. “We know the next games are going to be harder and we are going to have to fight hard on the court. We will be more aggressive.”

Bissette sparkled on the court scoring 10 points for St. Lucia which falls to 0-2. St. Lucia is competing for the first time at this tournament.

Pool C: Mexico (2-0) vs Trinidad and Tobago (0-2)

August 17, 2010

Mexico in driver’s seat for playoff berth after win over Trinidad and Tobago

GATINEAU, Que. – Mexico gained a stranglehold on a playoff berth at the NORCECA junior men’s volleyball championships on Tuesday with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-9 victory over  winless Trinidad and Tobago.

Ricardo Galindo led the Mexicans with 10 points while Jose Mendoza and Jorge Cabrera added eight each. With the victory, Mexico has a 2-0 record in round robin play in pool C.

“We have been playing well but we can still improve our game,” said Mexico’s head coach Francisco Javier Jimenez Espitia. “Our goal here is to be one of the top teams and we can’t be totally satisfied with our playing so far.”

“The players are getting into rhythm and feeling better everyday,” said Mexico’s team captain Jorge Barajas. “We have a very strong opponent tomorrow (USA) and we expect to be in our best condition for this match.”

For Trinidad and Tobago (0-2) this tournament is about gaining some more valuable international experience.

“Our team played fair today in comparison to what I know they could do,” said Trinidad and Tobago’s head coach Gideon Dickson. “We lack experience at this level and it particularly showed in the third set.”

“We showed a lot of improvement today and the support that was lacking yesterday was there today,” said Akim Bushe who notched five points for Trinidad and Tobago. “The game is a lot faster at this level and we just want to better again in our next match.”

Brandon Legall led Trinidad and Tobago in scoring with six points.
